Discover: Who Is Peter Lik? His Life, Wealth, And Fine Art Photography

Peter Lik is, by all accounts, a jaunty, and braggadocios landscape photographer. He once told a journalist, “I’m the world’s most famous photographer, most sought-after photographer, most awarded photographer” and commented, “I’m God. Nailed it.” So, who is this famous, highly awarded and sought-after landscape photographer, Peter Lik?

Peter Lik’s life and career

Peter Lik was born in 1959 to Czech immigrants in Melbourne, Australia. Lik took his first photograph at eight years old, capturing a spider web shimmering with dew in his family garden with a Kodak Brownie. The beauty of Australia undoubtedly cultivated his love of nature: “Growing up in Australia, I was surrounded by an incredible landscape that captivated.”

In 1984, he traveled to the US and snapped his first picture with a medium format camera, a pivotal moment in his career. The same year, he sold his first photograph to a calendar company. A few years later, he embarked on a four-year journey across America, using 1,000 rolls of film, capturing picturesque landscapes from every American State.

He won his first award in 1999 for Lone Shack, the first of many honors to come, including:

• the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Photographers of America,
• the Fellowship degree by the American Society of Photographers,
• and several Masters of Photography degrees (giving him license to call himself a “master” of photography on his official website).

Proudly self-taught, Lik never went to college, and pursued his photography dreams straight away.

Lik captures raw beauty in every image; vibrant colors explode in every corner of his well-lit images. He’s well known for his panoramic photos, which provide a wide angle-view of grand skies and unique natural features. I take a great deal of inspiration from his rich, colorful landscapes that invoke the wonder of nature.

He also deftly captures the spirit of a place. Recently, he shot Shadows of Time, a black and white image of Big Ben through an archway, which perfectly captures the glory, mystery, and seediness of London all at once.

One mysterious photo, Ghost, the color version of the monochromatic Phantom, presents what looks like an ethereal figure in a beam of light and dust in the Antelope Canyon (Arizona is one of my favorite locations to shoot). Until 2022, Phantom held the world record for the most expensive photograph ever sold, bought by an anonymous buyer in 2014 for $6.5 million. This begs the question, how wealthy is Peter Lik?

Lik Fine Art is Lik’s expansive brand and website. Some artists like to only discuss the aesthetic and emotional quality of artworks, avoiding talk of money and sales. Not Lik. He’s not only an artist, but a highly motivated, successful entrepreneur, using cunning sales tactics to draw buyers into purchasing his art in his multiple galleries. Peter Lik’s galleries are based in Key West, La Jolla, Mandalay, Miami, New York City, Venetia, and more.

He’s sold hundreds of millions of dollars in prints through his innovative business style. Ten years ago, the Times reported that he had grossed over $400 million from prints alone, and he’s only ramped up his sales since. His current net worth is unknown, but given his wide range of successful business enterprises, including real estate, furniture, and print sales, he is one of the wealthiest photographers of all time.

I’m happy that I can agree with Lik, “My travels have taken me to the most amazing locations around the world, capturing landscapes that I could only once dream of shooting.” Although he may appear boastful, he clearly loves his craft and seems passionate about nature and adventure.
