For many years, a long time friend invited me to experience the beaches of the Florida panhandle. In the summer of 2020, I set aside some time for my family and I to take a vacation and experience the Florida coastline. After a couple days on the road, we arrived to beautiful white sandy beaches and warm turquoise ocean water.
I had learned about a nearby fishing pier that the locals used. My first visit to the pier was at high noon with bright sun light and a crowded beach. For the next three days I returned at sunrise hoping for soft morning light. On the last morning of our vacation everything came into place. As the sun rose, the summer skies put on a light show of delicate pastel colors and the ocean water was a beautiful turquoise. It was a sight to behold and well worth the patience to capture this fleeting moment in time.

At 1,545 feet long and 30 feet above the water, this pier has a commanding presence. Its strength visible from the thick and wide stance of the pillars, this pier has withstood numerous storms. Using a long exposure smoothed the waves creating this bold and beautiful scene.

Most morning glory flowers unravel into full bloom in the early morning. The flowers usually start to fade a few hours before the "petals" start showing visible curling. They prefer full solar exposure throughout the day.

Sea Oats
Sea Oats is a tall, erect perennial grass that can grow to 1 to 2 m in height. Its long, thin leaves reach lengths of 20 to 40 cm and are about 0.6 cm in width, tapering to a pointed apex. The plant produces inflorescences of flat spikelets, each of which contains 10 to 12 wind-pollinated florets. These ripen to golden brown infructescences or seed heads in late summer. The seeds are dispersed by wind and can be carried long distances by storms and ocean currents, but reproduction commonly occurs vegetatively by forming buds around stem bases.

Uniola paniculata, also known as sea oats, seaside oats, araña, and arroz de costa, is a tall subtropical grass that is an important component of coastal sand dune and beach plant communities in the southeastern United States, eastern Mexico and some Caribbean islands. Its large seed heads that turn golden brown in late summer give the plant its common name.

This dilapidated and broken pier was a challenge to photograph. It was no longer connected to the shore so in order get the shot I was seeking I had to take a small risk and walk across a long precarious wooden plank from the shore over the water with my camera gear. Once on top of the pier, I stepped over a few missing planks and setup my camera to show the detailed character of the aged wooden pier. I then patiently waited for the sun to go down beyond the horizon and capture the afterglow of beautiful pastel hues spreading across the sky. This calm colorful scene came and went within a matter of seconds but my risk and patience was worth the effort.

Crown shyness is a phenomenon observed in some tree species, in which the crowns of fully stocked trees do not touch each other, forming a canopy with channel-like gaps. The phenomenon is most prevalent among trees of the same species, but also occurs between trees of different species. There exist many hypotheses as to why crown shyness is an adaptive behavior, and research suggests that it might inhibit spread of leaf-eating insect larvae.

Bald Cypress trees reflected on a quiet calm morning. The day before I took this shot the heavy winds, sunny blue skies and bright sunlight were a real challenge to get a good exposure. I returned the next morning in the dark waiting for the early morning soft light to reveal this reflection of cypress trees in their red autumn foliage.
Bald cypress is a deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States. Hardy and tough, this tree adapts to a wide range of soil types, whether wet, dry, or swampy. It is noted for the russet-red fall color of its lacy needles.

When all the elements of nature come together it makes for epic scenes. It had been a windy autumn day and my hope of the trees being reflected in the water were vanishing. As the evening sun casts its last rays of light across the pond and on the forest bursting with color, the wind subsided and my heart filled with joy as I captured this majestic moment. The next day a blistering cold front came through and blew most of the leaves away. So glad I patiently waited for this scene to unfold.

Oak Alley Plantation is a historic plantation located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, in the community of Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana, U.S. Oak Alley is named for its distinguishing visual feature, an alley (French allée) or canopied path, created by a double row of southern live oak trees about 800 feet (240 meters) long, planted in the early 18th century â long before the present house was built. The allée or tree avenue runs between the home and the River.

The bark of a loblolly pine tree is covered in green moss. The word "loblolly" is a combination of "lob", referring to thick, heavy bubbling of cooking porridge, and "lolly", an old British dialect word for broth, soup, or any other food boiled in a pot. In the southern United States, the word is used to mean "a mudhole; a mire," a sense derived from an allusion to the consistency of porridge. Hence, the pine is named as it is generally found in lowlands and swampy areas.

Pinus taeda, commonly known as loblolly pine, is one of several pines native to the Southeastern United States, from central Texas east to Florida, and north to Delaware and southern New Jersey. The wood industry classifies the species as a southern yellow pine. U.S. Forest Service surveys found that loblolly pine is the second-most common species of tree in the United States, after red maple. For its timber, the pine species is regarded as the most commercially important tree in Southeastern US.

I love how fog brings a sense of mystery to a scene. These trees were completely cloaked in heavy dense fog creating a mystical forest in the early morning light. The calm water gives a mirrored reflection of this ethereal forest scene.

The Museum of Pop Culture, or MoPOP is a nonprofit museum dedicated to contemporary popular culture. MoPOP is located on the campus of Seattle Center, adjacent to the Space Needle and the Seattle Center Monorail, which runs through the building. The structure itself was designed by Frank Gehry and resembles many of his firm's other works in its sheet-metal construction, such as Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Gehry Tower.

Japanese maple trees take on some interesting shapes with their twisted branches. Having this tree reflected by the calm waters of this pond was a pleasant find. Kubota Garden is a 20-acre Japanese garden in the Rainier Beach neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. A public park since 1987, it was started in 1927 by Fujitaro Kubota, a Japanese emigrant. Today, it is maintained as a public park by the Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Kubota Garden Foundation.

The deep red and purple colors of this eternally beautiful sandstone rock formation was formed by the timeless erosion of wind and rain. I had to position myself just right to capture this unique alignment of separate sandstone rocks to get the heart shape to appear. The midday sun lit up this narrow passageway creating a beautiful symphony of light and color.

The Texas State Capitol is the capitol building and seat of government of the American state of Texas. Located in downtown Austin, Texas, the structure houses the offices and chambers of the Texas Legislature and of the Governor of Texas. Designed in 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed from 1882 to 1888 under the direction of civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker. A $75 million underground extension was completed in 1993. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

The mountain rises abruptly from the surrounding land with elevations in the park ranging from 1,600 feet to over 14,000 feet (490 - 4,300 m).

Carbon Glacier is the largest glacier by volume in the contiguous United States, while Emmons Glacier is the largest glacier by area. Silver Falls State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Oregon, located near Silverton, about 20 miles (32 km) east-southeast of Salem. It is the largest state park in Oregon with an area of more than 9,000 acres (36 km2), and it includes more than 24 miles of walking trails, 14 miles of horse trails, and a 4-mile (6.4 km) bike path. Its 8.7-mile Canyon Trail/Trail of Ten Falls runs along the banks of Silver Creek and by ten waterfalls, from which the park received its name.

Aspen trees are all native to cold regions with cool summers, in the north of the Northern Hemisphere, extending south at high-altitude areas such as mountains or high plains. They are all medium-sized deciduous trees reaching 15-30 m (49-98 ft) tall. In North America, it is referred to as Quaking Aspen or Trembling Aspen because the leaves "quake" or tremble in the wind.

The landscape of Dinosaur National Park, Colorado, is overwhelming with its towering sandstone canyons, challenging white-water rafting, and ancient history of fossilized dinosaur bones. The enormity of this rock formation was something I had to capture on film but needed the right perspective to reveal its size. I happened upon a nearby cave, and when I looked back through the entrance, I knew I had found the perfect spot. I love how the cave perfectly outlines the rock formation, which steals the spotlight, and the trees below are completely dwarfed by its size.

New Zealand is full of epic landscapes. The mountains surge right out of the ocean creating a place of wonder and amazement. While on the South Island I was fascinated with its beautiful landscapes, friendly people, and hospitality. One of the hostels I stayed at offered transportation to a nearby lake to watch the sunrise over the mountains. I took some shots of the lake, but afterwards I noticed this tree standing alone in a lush green meadow. The snow capped mountain peaks in the background are Mount Tasman and Mount Cook. I came alive inside as I pressed the shutter to capture this peaceful scene of color and contrast of light from the morning sun.

Plant enthusiasts have selectively bred azaleas for hundreds of years. This human selection has produced over 10,000 different cultivars which are propagated by cuttings. Azalea seeds can also be collected and germinated. Azaleas are generally slow-growing and do best in well-drained acidic soil. Fertilizer needs are low. Some species need regular pruning. Azaleas are native to several continents including Asia, Europe and North America. They are planted abundantly as ornamentals in the southeastern US, southern Asia, and parts of southwest Europe.

The name "tulip" is thought to be derived from a Persian word for turban, which it may have been thought to resemble. Tulips originally were found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, but since the seventeenth century have become widely naturalised and cultivated (see map). In their natural state they are adapted to steppes and mountainous areas with temperate climates.

The waterfall is produced by Panther Creek approaching a cliff and then sharply making a turn. Some of the water rushes too quickly and falls over the side prematurely at the bend, but the majority of the water follows the creek until it reaches a natural trough which then drops off. At the dropoff, the horsetail begins the first tier of the waterfall, which drops 102 feet (31 m). After this, a 30-foot (9.1 m) drop concludes the waterfall and the creek continues.

Zilker Metropolitan Park is a recreational area in south Austin, Texas at the juncture of Barton Creek and the Colorado River that comprises over 350 acres (142 ha) of publicly owned land. It is named after its benefactor, Andrew Jackson Zilker, who donated the land to the city in 1917. The land was developed into a park during the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Classical grist mill designs are usually water-powered, though some are powered by the wind or by livestock. In a watermill a sluice gate is opened to allow water to flow onto, or under, a water wheel to make it turn. In most watermills the water wheel was mounted vertically, i.e., edge-on, in the water, but in some cases horizontally (the tub wheel and so-called Norse wheel). Later designs incorporated horizontal steel or cast iron turbines and these were sometimes refitted into the old wheel mills.

This type of bridge was originally designed to allow pedestrians to cross canals while allowing the passage of barges beneath. When constructed using the climbing ascent and descent this had the further advantage of not using space from the adjoining fields for approaches. In formal garden design a moon bridge is placed so that it is reflected in still water. The high arch and its reflection form a circle, symbolizing the moon.

From the side, a beam of light is only visible if part of the light is scattered by objects: tiny particles like dust, water droplets (mist, fog, rain), hail, snow, or smoke, or larger objects such as birds. If there are many objects in the light path, then it appears as a continuous beam, but if there are only a few objects, then the light is visible as a few individual bright points.

Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to other sub-aerial processes. Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways eroded away, making the corridors deeper and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic "flowing" shapes in the rock.

The Light Shines In The Darkness
An oak tree is softly backlit from the morning sun glowing through the fog creating a silhouette which exposes each of it's intricate branches. From its original graphic meaning, the term silhouette has been extended to describe the sight or representation of a person, object or scene that is backlit, and appears dark against a lighter background. The Hoh Rainforest is located on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington state, USA. It is one of the largest temperate rainforests in the U.S. The dominant species in the rainforest are Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla); some grow to tremendous size, reaching 95 meters (312 ft) in height and 7 m (23 ft) in diameter. Coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii), western redcedar (Thuja plicata), bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), red alder (Alnus rubra), vine maple (Acer circinatum), and black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) are also found throughout the forest.

An intricate web of branches of a japanese maple tree reach out in all directions showcasing its beautiful fall colors. In some Native American cultures, a dreamcatcher or dream catcher (Ojibwe: asabikeshiinh, the inanimate form of the word for "spider") is a handmade willow hoop, on which is woven a net or web. The dreamcatcher may also include sacred items such as certain feathers or beads. Traditionally they are often hung over cradles as protection. It originates in Ojibweculture as the "spider web charm" (Ojibwe: asubakacin "net-like", White Earth Band; bwaajige ngwaagan "dream snare", Curve Lake Band), a hoop with woven string or sinew meant to replicate a spider's web, used as a protective charm for infants.

The twists and turns of the Japanese maple tree are quite mesmerizing. The fall foliage was on full display and putting on a spectacle. In Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster, a Gorgon, generally described as a winged human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair.
